suburban_wildlife.jpg
Suburban Wildlife in KZN is the latest addition to the popular series of wildlife handbooks published by WESSA:KZN. For convenience and easy reference, this glossy, full colour publication comes in an A5 format with clearly laid out, colour coded categories.

The author of the book is well known entomologist, Dr Jason Londt, and it is both scientific and entertaining. With full colour pictures on every page, and written in an easy to understand style, it has instant appeal to a wide spectrum and is suitable for primary through to secondary school levels. The United Nations has declared 2010 the International Year of Biodiversity, making this the ideal time for the release of this most accessible and informative book.

"There is no doubt that our precious biodiversity is under great threat and that only one thing can save it – a proper appreciation of its true value. My hope is that people’s natural curiosity about animals that live in and around their homes will lead them to much greater appreciation of the incredible natural heritage that we as South Africans possess, as well as a willingness to stand up  for its proper protection and management.” Jason Londt

Invasion of natural areas by alien plants is the second most serious threat to biodiversity following direct habitat destruction. Invasive alien plants (IAPs) out-compete indigenous species because they grow faster, mature earlier, and produce more seeds. This results in dense infestations that replace the natural vegetation and have a detrimental impact on water resources, biodiversity and agricultural potential.

Invasive Alien Plants in KwaZulu-Natal covers the 40 most widespread invasive alien plants in the province. Each double spread page is dedicated to one species with full colour photographs to assist in easy identification. For the benefit of lay people, the common English name is given first, followed by the scientific, Afrikaans and Zulu names. Detailed information is provided on the clearing and control of IAPs, their economic, environmental and social impacts, our legal obligations to remove them, and what can be done to combat them.

Every gardener should have a copy of this book, and it is a must for schools and educational institutions as it is crucial to inform people, and create the necessary awareness of the dangers of IAPs. It is also ideal for training purposes and use in the field.

Antelope of Southern Africa is an updated, fully revised version of the original book which was first published in 1974 based on a series of lectures by Nolly Zaloumis, one of South Africa’s most distinguished and honoured conservationists. This new edition has been completely rewritten and has beautiful new photographs on every page. For easy identification purposes, it also includes a comprehensive set of diagrams relating to antelope shapes, sizes, horns and markings. As with all the Wildlife Handbook series, it is a high quality, full colour publication and comes in a compact A5 size for convenience and easy reference in the field.
