Environmental Education Centre
Bush Pigs is situated in the heart of the Waterberg Mountains near a rural/agricultural town called Modimolle, in Limpopo Province. Our facilities are situated on two privately owned farms. The original farm is 260 hectares in extent comprising a diversity of habitats including grasslands, rocky ridges plunging into a ravine, a perennial stream and adjacent wetland. The second farm consists of 1400 hectares of typical bushveld savanna in a beautiful mountain setting. It is a game farm fenced and stocked with a variety of antelope species, zebra, giraffe, rhino and various other animals.
As an education centre, camps run all year through and about 4000 children come to us every year from about 45 schools from countries that include South Africa and Botswana. Usually camps are run from Monday to Friday. The set up allows children to experience our different camps; Camp Baboon, Camp Hedgehog and Camp Crocodile are situated on the main farm while Camp Gemsbok is situated on the game farm. The children are kept busy the whole day and we take responsibility for their health and well being the whole time they are with us. The children we receive are from a variety of different backgrounds, cultures and economic classes.
In 2009, the ownership of Bush Pigs was transferred to WESSA (Wildlife and Environment Society of Southern Africa) NAR (Northern Areas Region). Bush Pigs registered as an Eco-Centre in April 2010.
