Green Coast is WESSA’s newest eco-label, awarded to coastal sites in South Africa where a sensitive species, habitat or cultural heritage site is being sustainably managed, leading to increased tourism along our coastline. The Green Coast label complements the international Blue Flag award, which assures a world-class experience at urban swimming beaches, boats and marinas.
In the first phase, WESSA’s Ecotourism Unit will be piloting several sites along the South African coastline to develop and establish the label. Sites will include unspoilt beaches, non-urban, wild spaces with minimal infrastructure, as such areas are often the target for unsightly development. WESSA members are being invited to help select suitable sites and to work with the Ecotourism Unit and the relevant municipalities during the pilot phase of this “adopt-a-beach” programme.
To achieve Green Coast status, locations will have to comply with a set of site-specific requirements and inspection criteria. The award will be based on a clear and robust management monitoring system with local municipalities responsible for upholding the criteria, assisted by WESSA membership who will provide specific support in the collection and monitoring of baseline ecological info.
