African German Youth Initiative

The African German Youth Initiative (AGYI) is a multi-lateral initiative of the German Government and the African Union Commission (AUC) aimed at enhancing youth exchange and mobility between African countries and Germany in the context of Education for Sustainable Development. The initiative, implemented by WESSA in South Africa, aims to establish a responsible framework for strengthened African German youth exchange partnerships.

The Initiative is building upon already existing youth exchange and volunteering programmes, and has been commissioned by the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development with the project ´Strengthening the African partner structure for the African-German Youth Initiative´.

WESSA will implement this project in South Africa for an 18-month period during 2017 and 2018 with the intention of contributing to the development of essential competencies and skills in young people from African countries and from Germany, in view of a ´global citizenship´.  It also aims at fostering a differentiated image of African countries on the German side, and Germany on the African side.

We have been an active role-player in youth exchange, youth empowerment and building capabilities of both foreign and local youth for numerous years. This has included hosting international volunteers, interns, researchers and developing mentoring programmes.  The AGYI builds on this experience and on our strength as an implementer of human capacity development initiatives.
