Lorien is an Adjunct Professor in Marine Biology at the Nelson Mandela University.

Since her PhD obtained from the University of Strasbourg, France, in 2008, her research has focussed on the impact of anthropogenic changes in the marine environment, including industrial fishing and climate change, on marine top predators in particular. More recently, she started developing research projects on the impact of plastic and associated pollutants on the marine ecosystem.

Lorien is actively engaged in several public platforms, as a member of various local and national committees or working groups of management or governmental bodies, as a marine scientist and as an environmentalist. She is currently the Acting Director of the Coastal and Marine Research Institute at the Nelson Mandela University.
