Treasure Beach
Rocky shores, dune forests, mangrove swamps and wetlands – Treasure Beach has it all.
Situated on the Durban Bluff, Treasure Beach Education Centre specialises in teaching children and university students about coastal and marine conservation.
At low tide, the rock pools are literally a treasure trove of fascinating creatures, from crabs and octopus to marine molluscs and surf anemones. Children, especially, enjoy the challenge of seeing who can spot the most amazingly camouflaged animals, hiding in cracks and crevices in the rocks.
Learning about how these marine animals live, what they eat, and how they protect themselves against predators is fascinating. We also make sure the children understand how factors such as poor water quality and unsustainable harvesting puts marine species at risk.
Our courses include coastal geomorphology, climate change, urban studies, workshops and projects – all aimed at building knowledge and motivating people to care for and protect fragile marine ecosystems.
