To enter, please fill in the entry form below and upload your entry. Large files such as videos can be shared via WeTransfer to yrecomp@wessa.co.za.

Make sure you fulfil the format, structure, and dissemination criteria for your category. Submissions to be in written and/or spoken English or must have English subtitles, and should focus on real and current local issues with links to the global context.

Present possible and constructive solutions supported by credible sources e.g. local
stakeholders, experts, academic research, etc.

Include a credit role, footnotes, or a bibliography with the sources of images, video footage, music, and information not created by students.

Terms and conditions

  1. The competition runs from 22 October 2024 – 23 March 2025 at 17:00 PM. No late entries will be accepted.
  2. The competition is open to all young reporters in South Africa aged 11-25.
  3. Participants younger than 18 years require parental consent to enter the competition and will need to have their parents sign the media consent form.
  4. Entries must be original, unpublished articles, photography, videos and podcasts.
  5. Plagiarism and AI generated content will not be accepted.
  6. Entries must not contain any third-party logos.
  7. Entries cannot be offensive or discriminatory, or display explicit gore, violence or sex.
  8. All entries should have a title of no more than 140 characters and a brief description of the entry.
  9. Participants agree that WESSA may use their articles, photographs, videos and podcasts in marketing and publicity materials related to the competition, including announcements of winners and showcases of the entries. This complies with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA).
  10. Entries will be judged based on the international assessment criteria for each category.
  11. The assessment panel’s decision of the winners is final. There will be no reassessment of the winners.
  12. Finalists’ entries will be displayed on our website.

Winners will be announced by 18 April 2025.
